I am looking to do a fairly large perennial garden. Do you have recommendations for a focal point and other perennials to plant around it?

It’s had to make recommendations without more information such as how much light.  A weeping Japanese Maple might be a good focal point with perennials around and under it.  I’d suggest visiting the garden center weekly now through June since the perennial selection will change with the season and make you choices based on the conditions in your garden area and the size and requirements listed on the tags of the plants.  There are thousands of choices.
