Our trees were devastated this year by Spongy Moth caterpillars. I sprayed with BT and it was effective on my ornamental trees but the wooded area behind our home was deforested.  Most trees rebounded, but they were weakened. Pine trees took a beating, and I suspect we will lose many of them. What can I do to prepare for next year’s cycle?

Be prepared to spray your ornamental trees again next spring.

Right now you can scrape as many of the “spongy” egg masses off the trunks of the trees and dispose of them.

Thankfully, the moths rarely occur in the same area for more that a year or two and usually kill only the weaker trees.
