Peter,

I just noticed about 6 white moth-looking creatures on the bark of my 40 years old Red Maple tree. They seem to be about 1 to 1-1/2″ long by 3/4″ wide. Near each one there was a pile of tan-looking “something or other” attached to the bark of the tree. What are they? Something tells me it is not good.

it sounds like Gypsy Moths and their eggs.  Scrape the egg masses off the tree and discard.  Many parts of the area saw the tree defoliatesd by the caterpillars that hatch from the eggs.  Fortunately healthy trees will re-foliate and be fine in years to come.
