My tomatoes have very thick skins.  I’ve never had this happen before.

Some varieties have tougher skins but it is likely due to the hot and often dry summer we’ve had.  Tougher skin prevents moisture loss during hot, dry weather.  Also, feeding more that necessary can also contribute to tougher skin on tomatoes.  Keep the soil a little moister during hot weather and back off on and feeding you might be doing.
