Hi Peter, I”m an avid gardener, just moved here from Savannah, and found your column immediately! I was very happy about that. My question is about recommendations for columnar trees for either side of the front door on my 2-story Colonial in Clifton Park, facing mostly east. I don’t know anything about junipers or arbor vitae or any of those kinds of trees, but I have 2 questions: the 2 trees there now are 7′ tall, not too far around and I’d keep them except they’re browning out in back. Back half is all brown on both. Can I bring the back half back to life? If not, what columnar tree will thrive there? Can be up to 5′ in diameter and tall. Thanks!! eva@evabowman.com

Emerald green arborvitae and columnar juniper and Dwarf Alberta Spruce are all often used in the manner you describe.  Problem is, the backsides never get any sun so they all will eventually brown out on the backside as yours have.  There is no real solution sad to say.
