Hi Peter- The sun shines down on the back of the house- in Halfmoon, front of the house is in shade a large part of the day-morning sun on one side of the front and late afternoon on the other side of the front, we want to spruce up our landscaping and want “shrubs” of some kind to give a nice finished look year round- though rsv

There are too many possibilities to list but the morning sun area would be appropriate for rhododendron, azaleas and even japanese maples.  Shady areas are trickier.  Clethera is a flowering shrub that performs well in shade but a nice mix of large hostas would also be another option.
