I had purchased a tree that I had done a lot of research about. It was a small sized crab apple that was supposed to have an upright growth and a higher canopy. I wanted it for a focal point so it would have to be specimen quality. The problem is that it is growing nothing like it is supposed to. Instead of the branches growing upright they are growing downward. It has become impossible to mow around it. Besides which it is also growing strangely. If I remove the lower branches at the bottom the tree will look bare in the middle because there are no branches there. The top of the tree doesn’t have a central leader. Instead, it has multiple crisscrossed branches where I wouldn’t know where to cut to shape it properly. I paid a lot of money for this tree and to have it professionally planted 3 years ago, since I am a senior and couldn’t do it myself. The tree is an eyesore. What do you recommend I do with it? Thank you for any help you can give.

I’d have to suggest that you call an arborist to check the tree out and prune it for you.  If the branches are growing downward, it seems as though you have a weeping variety not an upright variety…although it is hard to tell from a description.
