I have a part sun backyard in Gloversville and I want a privacy hedge. It would only have to be 4-5 feet high and 20 or so feet long-and I would prefer deciduous plants, not hemlock, thuja, or taxus. What I want is privacy from passerbys in my backyard while cooking out. Since most of the time we’d be sitting down, the height of 4-5 feet would be fine. Your thoughts on acer ginnala or acer campestre tightly sheared, or cornus alba elegantissima, Annabelle Hydrangea, etc?Richard-Landscape director at Columbia University and Gloversville Resident
The acer varieties you mentioned aren’t general suggested since they are beginning to be considered invasive. More on that HERE. In any event, we don’t stock them. The red-twig dogwood or Annabelle Hydrangea would both we better options for your height requirements.
