What would be the best flowering shrub in an area that gets mostly afternoon sun and could be planted close to some small pine trees?  We prefer one that does not spread too wide and does not grow above 6 ft high. We were thinking hydrangea, but not sure if the afternoon sun would hurt it. We live in Chestertown, NY on loon lake

Look into Spirea and Weigela.  There are many varieties of each in different sizes and colors.  Very hardy and reliable.  Hydrangeas prefer to have morning sun but not a lot of hot afternoon sun.
