Our “lawn” has no nutrients left. Its full of ants, japanese beetles and weeds. I hate to use chemicals. Is spreading out compost and planting new grass an option?

Sadly, it isn’t that simple.  I’d suggest getting a full soil test done…here’s a linkl to learn where to have that done:  http://warren.cce.cornell.edu/gardening-landscape/soils-climate/soil-testing-services.   That way you know what nutrients are lacking and how much organic matter (compost) you’ll need to till into the soil to grow a nice lawn.  Once you have the lawn up and established you’ll need to look into organic weed and grub control.  The folks at your local Hewitt’s can help with that as well as choosing the best grass seed blend for your location.
