I had read that lemon thyme repels bugs, but I have several that I just bought (in small pots) and flying insects seem attracted to them. Did I make a mistake?

Like most insect repellent plants, just siting there growing has no effect.  The leaves must be crushed to release the fragrance that repels insects.
