Peter – I’ve been cutting new coffee filters to fit in the bottom of my flower pots instead of broken pottery pieces. It seems too much soil eventually drains out with the excess water when pottery pieces are used. I’m now wondering if coffee filters might not be wise to use. Seems as if coffee filters might get clogged with soil preventing excess water from draining out. What’s your thought?

Honestly, I use nothing. I just put the Potting soil (Pro-Mix) in the pot.  Seems to work fine.  I do blend sand into the potting soil though…not a lot maybe a 2 cup of sand in a 4 gallon bucket of soil.
