Looking for advice on a tree issue I have.
I have 4 juvenile (6-7 years old) Kwanzan flowering cherry trees that have significant bark splits 3-4 feet long and very wide(I have photos). The issue began this spring. I live near Albany NY.
The trees appeared to be leafing out appropriately, but they have stopped and did not yield any flowers
-Should I do anything to treat the trees?
-should I remove them and replant?
– How do I prevent this from happening in the future?
Thank you for your help!
We had a very warm January followed by a severe cold snap in February. This caused a great deal of damage to many trees especially cherry trees. Tree wrap put on the trunks in the fall might have prevented the trunk splitting but not the loss of leaf buds due to the extreme temperature swing. If they don’t leaf out, they are done in and will need to be replaced.
