Why Lime?
LIME is used to raise the pH level of soil if needed to enhance plant growth.
The pH of the soil affects plant growth in three important ways:
- It has a distinct effect on the availability of essential nutrients. (See Chart Below).
- It has an effect on the survival of beneficial soil organisms. The ideal pH range for them is 5.4 to 8.0.
- It has a direct effect on the root cells’ ability to absorb both nutrients and water.
Remember
A pH of 6.00 is 10 times as acid as a pH of 7.0 and a pH of 5.0 is 100 times as acid as a pH of 7.0.
SOIL ACIDITY | FERTILIZER WASTED |
Extremely Acid–4.5 pH | 71% |
Very Strong Acid–5.0 pH | 54% |
Strongly Acid–5.5 pH | 33% |
Medium Acid–6.0 pH | 20% |
Neutral–7.0 pH | 0% |
